How to Save Water 365 Days A Year 1. Brushing your teeth? Turn off the water when you’re brushing and when you’re not rinsing off your toothbrush. 2. Flushing the toilet? It takes 5 gallons of water to clear the toilet bowl with one flush.10 The theory – if it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down applies here. 3. A shower, not a tub a day will save up to 40 gallons of water and shorter showers than usual can save up to 20 gallons. 4. If you have to use the tub to wash small children for instance, fill the tub with just 4”-6” of water and save 48 gallons of water. 5. Washing your face in the sink? Fill the sink with 3 inches of water rather than running the water from the faucet. 6. That first cup of coffee of the day from a coffee-on-the-go place uses approximately 50 gallons of water to make a single latte including all of its components – the paper cup combined with the liquid coffee.11 7.
